Understanding Shared Rakeback

February 25, 2009

Shared Rakeback is one of 3 dominant Online Poker Rakeback deals; the others being Contributed Rakeback and Dealt Rakeback. Shared Rakeback and Dealt Rakeback actually have a lot in common, except that Shared Rakeback does require the player to contribute something to the pot in order to collect a Rakeback.

Unlike Contributed Rakeback, however, Shared Rakeback means the rake s divvied up evenly between all participating players, giving each the opportunity to earn the same amount in Rakeback (assuming all are signed up for an online poker Rakeback deal.) Sadly, even those who are not earning Rakeback will still take away from those that are. By this I mean if two players are earning Rakeback and four are not, the rake is still divided up 6 ways before Shared Rakeback is paid.

Shared Rakeback means you get an even portion of the rake paid out according to the percentage of your Rakeback deal.

To better understand Shared Rakeback, we’ll offer an example of how it is calculated and paid.

For this example, we will use a 30% Shared Rakeback Deal at a 6-Handed NL Texas Hold’em table with $2/$4 stakes. We also use the standard online poker rake of 5% up to a maximum of $3.

You are in Seat 1, the Small Blind, earning Shared Rakeback.

Seat 1: You – Call BB $4
Seat 2: Fold
Seat 3: Raise to $7
Seat 4: Fold
Seat 5: SB $2 – Fold
Seat 6: BB $4 – Call $7
Seat 1: You – Fold

The Pot = $20
Participating players = 4

The SB participates by posting the blind bet, even though he Folded. Because you Called the Big Blind, you have also participated, even though you chose to Fold afterwards.

After the Flop…
Seat 1: You – [Out]
Seat 2: [Out]
Seat 3: Bet $20
Seat 4: [Out]
Seat 5: [Out]
Seat 6: Call $20

The Pot = $60

After the Turn…
Seat 1: [Out]
Seat 2: [Out]
Seat 3: Bet $20
Seat 4: [Out]
Seat 5: [Out]
Seat 6: Fold

Seat 3: Wins

Most online poker rooms do not recalculate the pot until the end of a betting round, therefore the last $20 Seat-3 put into it will not count towards the rake. So, the hand ends with $60 in the pot and 4 players contributing. Let’s first calculate the rake taken.

5% of $60 (60 x 0.5) = $3 raked

Now we divide the rake by the number of participating players to get the Shared Rake amount:
$3 / 4 = $0.75

Your Shared Rakeback will be paid at a rate of 30% of $0.75. So let’s calculate the Shared Rakeback accordingly.
30% of $0.75 (0.75 x 0.3) = 0.225

For this example, we’ll round that up to $0.23, but note that online poker rooms will usually keep the 0.225 and add all raked hands together before rounding up or down and paying your Rakeback.

So, you would have earned $0.23 in Shared Rakeback for this hand, as would all participating players who are earning Shared Rakeback, even though you contributed a minimal amount to the pot.
